The culturally competent teacher involves and works with families and community resources, understanding the differences in families, the important influence of family participation in students’ learning, and the benefit of collaborating with the wider school community. Imagine that you are the teacher of this classroom. What challenges might you encounter in collaborating with the parents of your students? How might you address these challenges? How might you demonstrate respect for the concerns or contributions of parents?

As a teacher I know that I will have students with different parents, who they are all brought up differently, and I am sure that they will all raise their children differently. I hope that as a teacher, I will nottell a student that what they are doing or the way they are talking is wrong. I hope that I will be able to tell my students in a nice way that in school we do don't act or talk that way.
I think it is very difficult to talk to parents but I hope that I will be able to have a good communication with the parents of my students.

The culturally competent teacher is aware of the diverse cultural groups represented in his/her classroom, investigates the sociocultural factors that influence student learning, and is able to integrate this knowledge into his/her teaching. No one enters a classroom without a personal history; thus, no one enters a classroom completely free of bias. How might your personal history/sociocultural characteristics intersect with those of your students? What challenges or advantages might you have as a teacher in this classroom? What misconceptions about various cultural groups have you confronted during this experience?

throughout my life I have learned about other cultures through friends and even now at work (coworks or my students) throughout work I started to understand the difficulties of been poor or been a Single parent.
Most kids in my VIPS all different background and have notice that sometimes some of those studets have a hard time concentrated due to the problems at home. From my experience I have learn that a lot of student go to an after school program (like my VIPS class) due to parent having to work more then one job and or being a single parent. Sometimes this can cause other problem with the child (sometimes children want to spend more time with there parents but they can't so they start to act up just to get their parents attation)
As a teacher, I will need to realize that each and every student will have a different background and different ideas about life.

The culturally competent teacher should be able to use a variety of assessment techniques appropriate to diverse learners and accommodate sociocultural differences that affect learning. How might the teacher be responsive to the linguistic, ethnic, and sociocultural characteristics of the students in his or her assessment practices?

Culturally responsive teaching means respecting the cultures and experiences of various groups and then uses these as resources for teaching and learning. Culturally responsive teaching allows students to be better human beings and more successful learners. Teachers must demonstrate ambitious and appropriate expectations and exhibit support for students in their efforts toward academic achievement. In conclusion, as we all know every year we get different students. Teacher need to always prepare them self for the students that he/she has in their classroom. We all know that every student is different. Every student comes from a different background, different cultures and even different life experience.

First response

First Response
Today was my first day at the school. The neighborhood seems to be very similar to other neighborhoods in providence, in other words not a very rich neighborhood. As I walked in the school I didn’t know what to expect, I when to the main office talked to the secretary asked to if I could talk to the person whom I was supposed to, she looked at me in a very confused way and just pointed to the cafeteria and told me that I would find him there. As I walked in the cafeteria, the students where all over the place one teacher was walking around and three other adults where sitting on the back. When I finally got the chance to talk to a teacher, I told him that I was looking for Peter, he told me that Peter was out but that he was in for him so I told him who I was and why I was here. He also looked at me confused so I asked him if Peter told him that I was going be here and he said that he had no idea but that Peter is in charge of the ymca program but that if I wanted I could go talk to the guys in the back. I told those people who I was and why I was here, they told me that they have other students from Rhode Island College (they started to talk amound themseves for the reason that they did not know “where” to place me) so they told me that I was going to work with the 2nd graders. As I walked in the teacher was friendly, she told me what the students were doing there and that I could walk around that classroom and see who needed help. Then she introduced me to a student and asked that student if it was ok for me to help him with his homework. Then, the teacher told me about this one child who needs more assistance and that if it was ok for me to work with him. The teacher introduced me to him and asked him that if it was ok for me to work with him.
Overall, I had a positive experience. I really like that the teacher introduced me to the students and told them that I was going to be with them every week and that I was here to help them with their home work. I also like that she told me a little bite about the child that she wants me to work with and then went to that child and told him “you know how sometimes you need help with your home work and that sometimes you just sit here and wait till I can help you” the child said yes so she told him “well, ms. Shirley will be here helping us.” And then, she asked him if it was ok if I could help him so he would not have to always wait. In addition, I like that she is not butting down any child.
