First response

First Response
Today was my first day at the school. The neighborhood seems to be very similar to other neighborhoods in providence, in other words not a very rich neighborhood. As I walked in the school I didn’t know what to expect, I when to the main office talked to the secretary asked to if I could talk to the person whom I was supposed to, she looked at me in a very confused way and just pointed to the cafeteria and told me that I would find him there. As I walked in the cafeteria, the students where all over the place one teacher was walking around and three other adults where sitting on the back. When I finally got the chance to talk to a teacher, I told him that I was looking for Peter, he told me that Peter was out but that he was in for him so I told him who I was and why I was here. He also looked at me confused so I asked him if Peter told him that I was going be here and he said that he had no idea but that Peter is in charge of the ymca program but that if I wanted I could go talk to the guys in the back. I told those people who I was and why I was here, they told me that they have other students from Rhode Island College (they started to talk amound themseves for the reason that they did not know “where” to place me) so they told me that I was going to work with the 2nd graders. As I walked in the teacher was friendly, she told me what the students were doing there and that I could walk around that classroom and see who needed help. Then she introduced me to a student and asked that student if it was ok for me to help him with his homework. Then, the teacher told me about this one child who needs more assistance and that if it was ok for me to work with him. The teacher introduced me to him and asked him that if it was ok for me to work with him.
Overall, I had a positive experience. I really like that the teacher introduced me to the students and told them that I was going to be with them every week and that I was here to help them with their home work. I also like that she told me a little bite about the child that she wants me to work with and then went to that child and told him “you know how sometimes you need help with your home work and that sometimes you just sit here and wait till I can help you” the child said yes so she told him “well, ms. Shirley will be here helping us.” And then, she asked him if it was ok if I could help him so he would not have to always wait. In addition, I like that she is not butting down any child.
